“Just the
facts, ma’am.”
Seven indisputable
opinions masquerading as facts:
1. The story of the fall is true if not factual. We are all self-absorbed schiphols, wanting what
we cannot have, wanting to be what we cannot be.
2. Some of us are worse than others. It depends on how self-absorbed we are.
3. Then: Narcissists are the
worst schiphols.*
4. When any of them say, “It’s my way or the
highway,” for God’s sake choose the highway, even if she doesn’t really consider
that an option. (For her “It’s my way or
the highway” means “It’s my way or some by-way,” because for her there is not really any other way than her own. She can't imagine you would go anywhere, since who would leave the center the universe for a frigid planet revolving around a blue star without a name?)**
5. But, very few of us can lecture others about
selfishness. And those few are in love
with their own goodness. (The story of the fall is true if not factual. The results are facts.)
6. So then, it’s better to take others for what
they are than what they are not.
7. Plan a party.
Invite your friends. If anyone
doesn’t come, there’ll be more cake for you.
If someone eats more than his share, there will still be enough because of
the one that didn’t come. If there isn’t
enough cake, there is cereal in the cupboard.

*This use of “schiphol” is not intended
to denigrate the Dutch, who are more likely to be exempt from narcissism than
almost anyone but the Danes. The airport in
Copenhagen is Kastrup. A "narcissist" is
anyone even more self-absorbed than I am.
**Speaking of Amsterdam and Copenhagen, New York City and inside-the-beltway are good examples of urban narcissists.
The historical usages of the doctrine of original sin are a hell of a stretch for a compassionate God. But, that is of little import. What is critical to say is, "I, Me, My, and Mine." But, thank you very much !
